Revisiting the “Classics”: The Failed BLADE TV Series

Do you even remember this one? It came and went so fast, just a blip on the radar, I wouldn’t fault you if you missed it. For that matter, I wouldn’t fault you if you had seen the show but have since blocked it from your memory, buried it beneath a mound of synapses, repressed its recollection, purged its imprint from your psyche. The short-lived BLADE TV series was BAD. Okay, maybe not BAD bad, but it sure wasn’t all that good, either.

Sometimes good shows fail despite their quality; they fail to gain traction and snag the attention of viewers. It happens far too often. But there are other times when nobody watches a given television program simply because it sucks. BLADE fell into this latter category. What were they thinking, anyway? Casting a Rapper with no acting experience—or ability—in the lead role. Sure, that’ll work! In all fairness, the guy did his best, and the stories were fairly solid, but without Wesley Snipes, the boat couldn’t stay afloat.

There’s a rumor going ‘round that Anthony Mackie, who plays The Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is interested in portraying Blade on the big screen. Now THAT would be a reboot that could work. Mackie has the chops, and the recognizability, to pull it off. Here’s hoping.
