Sad Goodbyes

Man, this past weekend it seemed like we were losing celebrities one right after the other. Ms. Olivia de Havilland left us at the ripe young age of 104. This lady is as close as we’ll ever get to American royalty. And while she’ll always be best known for GONE WITH THE WIND, she earned major cred in a Horror movie, too; if you’ve never seen HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE you are seriously missing out. She plays *very* effectively against type

Regis Philbin died too. The Reege! To my knowledge Regis had no Horror movie connections (unless we count THE SIMPSONS and their “Treehouse of Horror”) but the guy had been around forever.

And the biggest loss to the geek world was actor John Saxon. He earned his forever cool ranking from appearing opposite Bruce Lee in ENTER THE DRAGON, but he’d go on to star in genre classics like BLACK CHRISTMAS, three of the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films—the first one, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (where he got that badass fight scene with the bones of Freddy Krueger) and WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE–and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. He was also the Big Evil in BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS. Dude had range.
