Sexy But Deadly

Vampire lore time! Well, actually today’s vampire species is more of a vampire-like entity, but hey, it drinks down human blood so we’ll count it.

The impundulu is the ravenous blood drinker I’m talking about, it hails from the eastern Cape region of Africa. This bloodsucker is actually a witch’s servant, or rather, her familiar. It’s usually owned by a female witch and is later passed on to the witch’s daughter (and to think some find it strange when a mother passes their wedding dress down to their daughter). This passing of the impundulu to the daughter is one of the reasons the female children of witches rarely married.

The impundulu (plural: iimpundulu) almost always appeared to its mistress in the form of an absolutely gorgeous young man, who as you can probably imagine often became her lover, a literal sex slave. But when it wasn’t sexing up its bidding lady it was sent out to cause suffering and death to others, and believe me it was an insatiable, merciless and cruel killer. The witch’s main choice was to use it to kill, for it had a perpetual desire for blood, both human blood and the blood of cattle. If the witch didn’t allow her impundulu to feed it would result in her own death, so obviously she made sure the creature was always fed.

As I mentioned the impundulu is a merciless killer, entire families and herds of cattle were completely wiped out as the familiar sucked down the blood of each victim. But if the blood loss didn’t kill them it was the wasting disease caused by the impundulu, or sometimes it left you with a horrible cough and the inability to have children (called iphika). But in rare cases the victim got a quick death, this was called “being slain by the bird of heaven,” and it involved a sharp unbearable pain in the chest or head.

Now when the impundulu isn’t handed down directly it’s called an ishologu and it’s an ownerless monster that acts on its own and as you can imagine that results in pure chaos.
