Reports that the forthcoming (not soon enough!) third season of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS would feature a storyline in which Nandor the Relentless finds a love interest have led to many clamoring for that love interest to be his familiar, Guillermo. I cannot say it strongly enough, how much I oppose this idea. This has nothing to do with the same-sex angle. I oppose giving Nandor a love interest, period; it *might* work, if they do a riff on the whole “he discovers the reincarnation of his lost love from centuries prior” trope as first seen in DARK SHADOWS and later in BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA. (It was Dan Curtis’s adaptation of DRACULA, however, the one starring Jack Palance, that was the first to use this plot point for Count Dracula, and also the first to draw the connection between the fictional Count and the historical Vlad Dracula.) But that’d be good for one episode, maybe, with the love interest relegated to a cameo role.
The relationship as it stands between Nandor and Guillermo is, along with the relationship between the vampires themselves, the heart and soul of the show. It would alter that relationship irreparably to put a romantic spin on it. Spoil it. It would ruin the mojo. Don’t do it!
