Snyder’s ARMY OF THE DEAD

The title of the forthcoming movie from Zack Snyder puts a wee little lump in my throat, as it hearkens back to classic Romero movies. All that’s missing is the word “living” thrown in there. The movie, though, will mine some material that the maestro Romero never got around to examining in depth. It’s a heist movie. With zombies. And it stars Dave Bautista, who is these days giving the Rock a serious run for his money as the most successful professional wrestler turned movie actor. The recipe is there for a really fun film. I hope it is. Snyder has shown that he knows how to handle zombies with his remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD, and after he was unfairly criticized for the reception to BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN (a movie which, with the help of a good editor, is seriously underrated), it’d be nice to see him stage a comeback.

Dave Bautista shared the first photograph from the film. That’s it at the head of this article. There are no zombies, alas, but it does show us the titular army. As Snyder recently told THR: “There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware…balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen.” Sounds like a winner to me.
