Somerhalder Cast In V-WARS

There’s this forthcoming series from Netflix entitled V-WARS. It will consist of ten episodes and be based on the comic book series, also called V-WARS, written by Jonathan Maberry. The new series will star one Ian Somerhalder, who previously starred in a show called THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, which aired on the CW, and spawned a spinoff series called THE ORIGINALS. I’ve heard of V-WARS, the comic, although I haven’t read it. I’ve heard of Jonathan Maberry. He’s a talented writer. I’ve read a few of his books, and he and I are friends on Facebook. I’ve heard of the CW, the television network that formed when two fledgling networks WB and UPN merged in 2006, because it’s the network that used to air BUFFY. But I’d never heard of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES before, or THE ORIGINALS, or this guy Somerhalder. Go figure.

In V-WARS, Somerhalder won’t be playing a vampire, rather a human scientist named Luther Swann who will be fighting against the vampires. So basically he’s Eph Goodweather from THE STRAIN, then? Okay. I can dig it. Unlike Eph Goodweather, though, who had to fight against his own son, Swann will have to battle his best friend, who is leader of the vampires. If Maberry wasn’t the guy who wrote the original story, I’d be tempted to say this V-WARS sounds a tad derivative. Since he’s involved, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

I have read the comic book series that V-Wars is based on. I hope it will focus on the “good vampires”(although Nathaniel Cade gloomily notes in “Blood Oath” by Christopher that there is NO such thing as a good vampire including him- he can save humanity more times than I’ve had hot dinners but ultimate salvation and forgiveness for his own sins can never be his) who wish to have no part of the war between “bloods” and “beats”. I admit that the idea of vampires as some kind of put upon minority group sounds ludicrous but in a real world in which a black man has been elected President of the United States and gay marriage has been legalized by the US Supreme Court, this is not as silly as it sounds!
