Texas “Vampire” Attacks Woman and Gives Vampire Fans a Bad Name

Yet another crazy dumbass claiming to be a vampire has made the news and once again vampire fans are getting hell for it. I hate these people, I hate these stories, but here I am again writing about some moron giving us vampire lovers a bad name. Cue the rant and raving… now.

So here’s the story, a few days ago in Galveston, Texas a man claiming to be a vampire was jailed after attacking a woman, police say. Sound familiar? Yeah, probably because this happens on a regular basis – some spaz attacks someone, claims to be a vamp, and the media blames it on vampires in entertainment. I guess it never gets old.

Anyway, the 19-year-old Lyle Monroe Bensley was arrested on charges of burglary with intent to commit assault after forcing his way into a random woman’s apartment. Apparently the guy broke in, “growled and hissed” at the woman while biting and hitting her. Hissing!? Really Lyle?! What the fuck man, you have clearly watched WAY too many cheesy vampire movies. Ugh.

Bensley then dragged the woman outside where fortunately she managed to escape. Thank goodness. She ran to a parking lot and jumped into a car being driven by a neighbor. Bensley banged on the car window briefly before they sped off.

But that’s not where the madness ends.

“I’m a vampire and I’ve been alive for over 500 years,” Bensley said, reported Galveston Officer Daniel Erickson.

“He was begging us to restrain him because he didn’t want to kill us,” Erickson said. “He said he needed to feed.”

Erickson added that Bensley did not appear to be under the influence of drugs.

Bensley currently awaits a psychiatric evaluation in jail. His bail is set at $40,000 – here’s hoping no one is dumb enough to get his ass out.

Every time I read and report on these stories I go from being the sweet blogger you all know and love to a raging bitch. They make me angry – not only does the FAKE vampire piss me off, but the media does too. They do the same thing every single time, they don’t hold the attacker accountable for his/her actions, instead they blame it on vampire movies, books and TV shows. It’s infuriating. While researching this news story I came across loads of articles blaming this on the vampire craze. The vampire craze in NOT to blame, there are millions of vampire fans around the world and very few of us turn into giant sacks of crazy because of our love for the undead. This man was clearly unstable and it’s his mental health that is to blame, not the entertainment industry.

What do you guys think? Are you as sick of these fake vampires as I am?

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

  1. I cannot blame this guy so much, if (as it appears) he is so very delusional. As for the media, I don’t know what else to expect than to get these things mentioned. If when THE X-FILES were at their most popular, somebody committed a weird crime and attributed it to alien control, the media would certainly mention that fact. Likewise at a time when vampires are a wildly popular genre, and someone commits a crime claiming to be one–it will be mentioned. Indeed, that is one reason news services (quite logically) will publish *this* story as opposed to some other random assault. I’ve only skimmed the news reports, and must say what I read didn’t seem particularly sensational. Not that I read them all, of course. But I personally haven’t seen much of a hue and cry over this incident (not compared to–for example–the years of nonsense spewed regularly about HARRY POTTER).

  2. but who said he wasn’t a real vampire??? i didn’t see it say anywhere that they tested for that, if they’re going to hold someone for psychiatric evaluation they should atleast hide a bit of garlic in the room and see if he goes crazy with the smell, the scientific aproach is never rule out anything untill you have proven it wrong

  3. I agree with you Moonlight. It’s the same thing over and over again. The media and people themselves don’t take responsibility for their own actions. A person tries to bite someone, it’s the vampire hype. No it is this person being stupid, going for an insanity defense, or being bat **** crazy. Media and parents say the same about music (rap, metal, etc) and video games, especially Grand Theft Auto.

  6. I also agree with Moonlight. We’ve seen this before. Remember those who thought they were Superman? They learned the hard way when their capes didn’t fly, but at least they only hurt themselves.

Could this be a case of Rabies?

Rabies, or hydrophobia, is a disease that causes people to display several vampire-like symptoms, including the desire to bite others. The rabies virus attacks the nervous system and can also cause oversensitivity to sunlight and to other visual stimuli, such as mirrors. The word rabies means “rage” or “madness” in Latin, and was so named because people who contract it often become delirious, aggressive and suffer from hallucinations.

    1. Hmm, we have covered rabies before here. But I’m not not sure if that’s the issue with this man, but who knows, it might be.

  9. Good Day,

There is more to this story . . .

http://galvestondailynews.com/story/251918 . . . Bensley unwittingly consumed Rohypnol — a powerful sedative often called the date-rape drug — in punch he was given at a party.

If his story about getting drugged at a party is legit, I feel sorry for him. However, I am also just sick to death of the media overplaying everything that has the word vampyre attached to it.

    Cheers!!

  10. I am also so sick of the media blaming the vampire fans. Every time someone does something and then claims to be a vampire, they always blame us. HELLO! WE WERENT THE ONES DOING IT! They should blame the individual and not the group. Besides just bc a vampire craze has happened doesnt mean they can just blame us without proof. Especially if the person doing it may be under influence or just in a mental state, there could be a medical condition that makes him think he is anything but human (and not necessarily a vampire).

Stories like these are why I hate the media, they only think to blame everyone BUT the person responsible in these incidents.

  12. I think they do it mainly to fill up space. I mean, how much was there to report? But, by dragging in vampire literature it gives them “experts” to quote, etc etc and pads the article out. Plus, the controversy sells well.

yeah, I get tired of vampire fans being made out to be nut cases, though.

  15. I wonder if his mother or father or anybody who cares for his sorry ass anyway, are reading this right now. What a let down it must be.

I am not a bad person, i don’t feel good because that hasn’t happened to me. It must be hell reading that kind of shit about your kid on a blog, a newspaper or watching him get his 15 minutes on the news like that.

What can I say? I genuinely feel sorry right now for those poor people.

It could be that I just smoked some great bud after a dry spell, I don’t know, I’m getting all sentimental here and that doesn’t happen often to me when I’m online.

My heart goes out to you people.
I hope your son or whatever he is to you gets through this and gets some help.
If he could stay off old ladies’ necks, that’d be great, too.

    Peace…
