The Dead Are Alive

The title of this post is also the tile of a 1972 giallo (noirish Italian Horror flick) as well as several books, but here it is in reference specifically to the EVIL DEAD franchise. When ASH VS. THE EVIL DEAD got cancelled recently, at the culmination of its third season, and with Bruce Campbell announcing via his Twitter account that he was officially “retired” as Ash, some fans were worrying that it meant the end of the franchise. I wasn’t one of them. I had no doubts that the series would continue in some form or another. My assurance has now been verified. Sorta.

First, Bruce stated, again via Twitter, that he approved of the franchise continuing without him. A fan asked him if he would give his permission, and he responded “Not that they need it, but of course. Lots of unexplored stories and crossovers in the Evil Dead universe. #nextgen.” Then came even more news: again, via Twitter, Campbell has stated “Fans are wonderfully nit-picky. I can’t talk particulars yet, but I think fans will dig the upcoming incarnations.” Specifically, he was replying to a question regarding whether or not he would be willing to do voice work and motion capture for an EVIL DEAD video game, but those comments could apply to ANYthing. What this does confirm is that there have been talks, and there are new projects in the works. Sadly, it could be that Bruce is simply tired of playing Ash and doesn’t want to do it anymore, despite the wishes of his partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Then again, it could all be some Barnum-esque ballyhoo. Either way, the Dead will live again.
