The Dracula Museum

Okay, Dracula never had just ONE castle, alright? He had several. If any one location deserves the title Castle Dracula it is the fortress at Poenari, which is partially in ruins. Castle Bran is touted by the Romanian tourism department as Castle Dracula but it has only a tangential connection to him at best. Dracula DID maintain a fortress at Bucharest, a city that he founded. That structure is no longer standing, but the buildings that will house the all new DRACULA MUSEUM date to the 1700s and are themselves part of an historic site; they are situated right on top of the catacombs that once rested beneath the royal courts of Voivode Vlad III, surnamed Dracula. Those catacombs will make up a part of the museum. The proprietors are currently renovating the location in preparation for its opening, and this past week they discovered two skeletons!

To quote from their Facebook page: “Last week, during the renovation works of the Dracula Museum, under the floor of the basement, the builders found the remains of 2 individuals, killed and buried separately centuries ago…Coincidence or not, in the 15th century, our basement was part of the Royal Court of the bloodthirsty Vlad the Impaler, the real-life Dracula.”

The Museum’s website is up but still under construction, like the museum itself. It’s also pretty obvious from my brief interaction with them that English is not the first language of the proprietors (a logical assumption, even without firsthand experience) but they seem like really nice folks and they love Dracula, so you know they’re good people. I look forward to hearing more from them as the renovations continue.
