The Gates is Canceled

The Gates, a supernatural soap opera that premiered on ABC this past summer, has been canceled. Sorry Gates fans, but there won’t be a second season. I can’t say that I am disappointed, the one episode that I watched didn’t impress me in the least. I was bored.

For those that haven’t heard of The Gates, it’s a show which starts out by following Nick Monohan and his family, who have moved from Chicago to a quiet, upscale planned community called The Gates, where he will be Chief of Police. They soon realize that their neighbors are not what they appear to be. The Gates is filled with such creatures as vampires, witches, werewolves, and succubi – and the parents of The Gates will protect their children from the outside world no matter what. Cue the drama.

Like I said before, I wasn’t a big fan of the show, so I can understand why it was canceled. Granted I only watched the first episode, but I spent that entire episode yawning and rolling my eyes. It was boring, cliché and ridiculously cheesy. Definitely not my type of show. Apparently I am not the only one that feels this way, because reports are coming in saying that the show is finished. Several of the show’s stars have confirmed this by saying (via twitter) that the show has been canceled and that there will be no second season.

Quite a few people are already in an uproar over it, so I suppose that the show has some fans, not many, but some. Unfortunately for them, a show needs more than a couple hundred of viewers to survive.

At least we all have other vampire shows to enjoy. Yay Vampire Diaries!

What do you guys think? Were you a fan of the show, are you disappointed that it has been canceled? Or, like me, do you not care?

  2. ive never heard of the gates either, and i only just read the blog and i already think its boring. im with you on this one moonlight

  3. I am one of the fans of The Gates. I loved all the different stories with the various non-human types… it had vampires, werewolves (who of course hated each other), witches, succubi, and who knows what else might have shown up. The season finale ended with a cliff-hanger, and now I’ll never know what Charlie has become, after being brought back from death by Devon :(

Never judge a show by the first episode. I highly recommend watching the episodes online, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

    1. fantastic series, i thoroughly enjoyed it and was looking foreward to the next series but as ive just found out, its cancelled. typical every programme i like gets wiped ah well back to sci fil

    2. I agree. This was a good show, fun to watch… something different from all the boring CSI, etc.

Too bad it didn’t survive. :(

  4. I think it’s safe to say that if you have a vivid imagination then almost all soap operas can be boring…I do like Guiding Light and All my Children but anything else just puts me to sleep so don’t feel bad about being bored during one…

  5. I really enjoyed the show am I’m really sad to learn that it was canceled. It really was a modern day vampire tv series and it had a lot to offer. So what if some people couldn’t get into it. If you are a fan of science fiction and vampire movies then you would appreciate this show. I liked that it had all kinds of supernatural beings in it and it always kept me guessing as to what would happen next.

Really sad it’s not going to have a second season. : (

  6. I was catching up on it at sidereel and after watching the last one they had went looking for the next. Thats when I found out it was canceled. Yes I am highly disappointed! It was a great show with a lot of storylines that intertwined with each other and made for a very interesting and riveting show! One of the things I liked best was they could get down and dirty, no sparkles here, these vampires would rip out someones throat if they needed to! Werewolves too, and the witches use their powers for evil not just to help their friends.

My guilty pleasure is Vampire Diaries, which I call 90210 with fangs. It’s obviously made for a teen/young adult audience, and thats fine. Whats great about the gates is theres a slight element of that with the teen storylines but it’s grittier. It’s not all about sacrifice for mushy true love. It includes the stupid things kids do when they think it’s true love. And those things can be much harsher when your a vamp or a wolf!

I would love to see the show get picked up by one of the cable networks that would allow it to be even a bit more gritty and dark! I doubt it will happen but one can hope. Gates- I will miss you!

  7. I loved it. Came across it on Netflix and watched the entire first season in only a couple days went online to find out when the next season premiered and was highly disappointed to find it cancelled. I have seen all the vampire series, yes all of them, this was my favorite.

  8. I think if there was more publicity and advertisment it would have been a major hit. I wished I had heard of it sooner and I’m sure many people have yet to and would love it.
