The Green Knight Cometh
This one has me excited. It takes me back to my college days. As I majored in English Literature, I am more than familiar with the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from the Arthurian legends. Like all the Arthurian stories, it has currents running beneath the surface connecting it to older, more primal stories. In this case, Celtic mythology and the stories of Cuchulain, the Irish superman, and his battles with a similar greenish adversary, who is really a representation of the Green Man of pagan spiritualism. The story hearkens back to the dim age of human sacrifice and blood ritual. It has been filmed before—most notably as SWORD OF THE VALIANT with Sean Connery portraying the Green Knight—but its potential for chills has never been tapped. While not a Horror story outright, there are horrific elements aplenty. It would be easy for a movie to go that route. Hopefully the forthcoming film from A24 will not shy away from the scares. The trailer looks promising. (And the Knight looks royally bad-ass.)
The movie is due out on May 29th. I actually wish they’d waited until later in the year. The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight begins on Christmas, so in my mind this would make for a better holiday movie. The main thing, though, is that it’s good. Hopefully it will be.
