Pilou Asbæk (I’m glad this is a written report and not an audio one, so I don’t have to pronounce his name) portrayed the detestable Nazi ubermensch in the terrific J.J. Abrams-produced 2018 flick OVERLORD, and he has now been cast as Richard Straker, the Renfield character to the overlord of the vampiric variety, Kurt Barlow, in Stephen King’s SALEM’S LOT. Asbaek will be getting a lot more screen time than his vampiric master, if we can go by Tobe Hooper’s original adaptation of the novel back in 1979, where James Mason portrayed the character. In King’s novel, the vampire Barlow is a more prominent villain, and at this point we don’t know whether the new movie in development from producer James Wan will skew closer to the miniseries or the novel. Here’s hoping the former.
If the Straker in this new movie is closer to the one played by Mason, we can expect him to once again be a baddie given a power-up, as the Straker in the 1979 miniseries possessed some vampiric powers all his own. We had previously wondered if William Sadler, who was recently announced as having joined the cast, might portray Straker. Now that we know this isn’t the case, could that mean that Sadler will be…Barlow?
