The Politics of Zombie

I once got dogged-out by an ultra-Leftist female on the social media for suggesting, when she stated that the US ought to abolish its police force, that this would entail replacing it with some other kind of law enforcement organization, as a society cannot survive without one. She disagreed. “People are better than you think they are!” she responded. “They’ll do the right thing if left alone!” I was gobsmacked that someone with so much education—this woman was a PhD—could be so mind-numbingly stupid. And this pandemic has proven me right. People won’t do the right thing. They won’t even do the bare minimum. They won’t inconvenience themselves even slightly, even if it means saving lives. (Masks are uncomfortable, but they *do* reduce the spread of the ‘Rona. Not 100%, no, but some is better than none.) People, some people, a lot of them, I’d argue at least half, are selfish, stupid, mean-spirited, and overall vile creatures. (Yes, I am something of a misanthrope. I admit it. But I also wear my damn mask every time I go out.)

There are parallels to the pandemic through which we are all currently living in the zombie movies we watch. “We’re not particularly good at acting quickly and decisively, or marshalling our resources cooperatively these days, so if our collective response to the COVID-19 epidemic is any indication, we should all get used to the taste of brains,” says the author of this linked article. Preach, brother (or sister)! If there were a zombie apocalypse, there would be a sizable number of people who would deny it was real, who would dismiss it as a conspiracy put out by the liberal media, even as zombies were tearing their throats out. I truly believe that.
