Hunedoara is a mandatory destination of those who travel Romania on the trail of Count Dracula. It is said that the legendary Vlad III of Wallachia (commonly known as Vlad the Impaler) lived here for a while, and as a prisoner.
Somehow or other, Castle Bran got bequeathed the title of “honorary” Castle Dracula. Maybe it just has the “look.” Maybe it’s more accessible. I dunno. I DO know it in actuality stakes (ahem) no claim to that title, and neither does the Romanian department of Tourism inform visitors that the appellation IS strictly “honorary.” The real Castle Dracula is a ruin and rather hard to get to. Perhaps tourists aren’t down with the hiking necessary to visit it. (I sure would be, but that’s not germane.) Thus they offer a pretty stand-in.
I don’t know why, though, they don’t offer Hunyadi Castle, also known as Castle Corvin, in Hunedoara (Transylvania, obviously) as Drac’s castle, since it actually WAS where he lived for several years—albeit not as a voluntary resident. The King of Hungary held Dracula prisoner there, and if the bloodthirsty Impaler wasn’t actually chained in the dungeons the whole time, he at least wasn’t free to leave. And Castle Hunyadi is just as picturesque as Bran, if not moreso.
Then again, maybe the tourism board knows what it’s doing, after all. They offer Bran as the “postcard” site, with Hunyadi as a complement, and for the truly adventurous, the ruins at Poenari. Three castles = longer stays = more revenue!
Maybe it’s because he lurks at the ruins? LOL
