I have seen it stated online that the inclusion of Tig Notaro’s character in the film, added via CGI effects after the fact, does not “look right”, with some people claiming that the insertion and alteration is “obvious”. Horseshit.
I can remember once, back in the 80s, this kid I knew, far wiser than the bulk of us, wise beyond his years. When a discussion began about backmasking, the practice alleged by urban legend through which evil satanist record company execs were inserting subliminal messages into Heavy Metal albums, this kid, whose name, ironically, was Christian, had this to say: “People see what they want to see. What they go in expecting to see. If you go in looking for something satanic, you’re gonna find something, guaranteed. And if you’re listening for something satanic, you’re gonna hear it, whether it’s really there or not.” He was right. There were no messages in those songs when you played them backwards. People heard them because they *expected* to hear them. The same is true of people now claiming they could tell that Tig Notaro was inserted into the film via CGI. They went in looking to see discrepancies and thus they saw them.
I reported on it when Chris D’elia got accused of being a sex fiend and the decision was made to replace him in the film by way of CGI. But just now I had to look up his name; I couldn’t remember it. Nor did I know which character in the film was the one recast, or which actor was playing the recast part. I could have looked it up, sure. I just didn’t care. I’ll repeat that for the benefit of those who might have missed it. I JUST DIDN’T CARE. I only wanted to watch the movie, and I hoped it would be good. (Which it was.) So I knew that a character had been added after the fact via CGI, but I didn’t know which one. I *was* on the lookout for any jarring, or even subtle, visual abnormalities that might suggest this editing. I didn’t see any. But then I wasn’t watching the film focused on the matter, either. I wasn’t watching it obsessively to see if I could spot any irregularities. I was just watching the movie. And I did NOT see any of the seams. That’s because I don’t think there *were* any seams, or if there were, they were so tiny as to be irrelevant.
