The Vampire Diaries’ Joseph Morgan Teases the Return of Klaus

The last time we saw Klaus he was getting the hell out of Mystic Falls after Damon mentioned the big bad Mikael. We haven’t heard much since then, Klaus wasn’t even in last week’s episode, but according to a recent interview with Joseph Morgan, Klaus is coming back in tonight’s episode and it’s going to change everything. Yay!

“Episode eight will really change the game,” Morgan said of the episode titled “Ordinary People.” “We’ll learn more about the Mikael/Klaus relationship, see where Klaus’ fear springs from and why it’s so justified.”

We also get another flashback, one that goes WAY back. Morgan of course couldn’t give details, but he did verify that another member of the Original family will be introduced in an upcoming flashback.

We also get a good look into Klaus’ past which will reveal even more about the character and why he is the way he is. Morgan describes Klaus as “incredibly dysfunctional.”

“Deep down he just wants to be loved. Friendship and family have been lacking for him the last 1,000 years.”

Which is why it took him so long to compel Stefan.

“It was really important to Klaus that Stefan come around on his own, through his own free will. He really wanted to believe they could be friends like they were in the 1920s.”

Stefan’s love for Elena made that even more difficult than Klaus could have imagined, plus, Morgan admits his vampire doesn’t really understand the concept of friendship. He says Klaus has always tried to control those close to him “through fear.” It isn’t working out very well for him, huh?

Morgan really made Klaus into a fantastic villain by combining the writers’ vision for his character with his own belief that the scariest thing “isn’t when someone is shouting at you.”

Take the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, he said, citing Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz’s work as Col. Hans Landa.

“The threat is that much more real because it means nothing to him. You know he’ll just kill you and not think twice about it. I wanted to play on that sociopathic side.”

And he definitely nailed it. I love Klaus! We get to see him again tonight in an all new episode titled “Ordinary People.” Check out the promo for the episode:
