The Vampire Diaries: Meet Elena’s Parents!

I’ve got a double dose of awesome for you Vampire Diaries fans – Elena and Jeremy’s parents AND a little dish on the season finale! Woot!

It was announced not too long ago that the big season finale will be on May 10, meaning we only have one short month left of Vampire Diaries-filled goodness. But instead of focusing on the end of the season, we’re going to look forward to the upcoming episodes and the exciting things to come – like meeting Elena and Jeremy’s parents.

Thanks to TV Guide, here is your first look at Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert, portrayed by James MacDonald and Erin Beute. “One of the things we want to do in the finale is explore a time for Elena when life was simpler,” says executive producer Julie Plec. “She had parents and no vampires in her life.”

Hmm… I wonder how that flashback will fit into the chaotic storyline already going down. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The episode, which will feature the return of Sara Canning as Aunt Jenna (yay!), doesn’t just show happy family memories, it also includes the deadly accident in which the family car veered off the bridge and killed Elena’s parents. Remember, says Plec, “Elena almost died with them, but Stefan saved her.”

Speaking about that particular scene, Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev (better known as Elena) describes it as “something I hopefully will never have to experience in real life — trying to survive underwater while trying to save other people. It was quite intense and a little scary. I’m used to being underwater with a tank, but having to act without the tank is completely different. We were in the water two days for eight hours a day. By the end I was exhausted and slept like a baby.”

Sounds like zero fun.

The Vampire Diaries will return next Thursday, April 19th, at 8:00 PM with Episode 3.19 “Heart of Darkness”.

What do you think about meeting Elena’s parents and watching that horrible flashback? What are your hopes for the finale?
