The Vampires of Harry Potter

With the recent premiere of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 trailer at the MTV Movie Awards, Potter fever is hot once again and every young and old fan is buzzing with excitement. That excitement brings you today’s post, a look into the vampires of Harry Potter.

The Ministry of Magic classified vampires as Beings, something that led the Merpeople and Centaurs to decline the same status since they did not wish to be associated with the undead creatures. Vampires are not considered to be Wizards, and the way in which to deal with them can be found in the Ministry’s Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.

While vampires have rights and are not considered real threats to the Wizard community, they are in fact studied in Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Some have more issues with the vampires than others, like Rita Skeeter for example. Rita felt that the Ministry of Magic should be “stamping out vampires” rather than “quibbling about cauldron thickness.” Then you’ve got those folks that simply take the vampire hunter approach.

Not everyone hates vampires though, such as the author, Eldred Worple, who spent time living among vampires, and wrote a book, Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires. The vampire Sanguini is also considered a friend of his

Here‘s a look at some of the vampire moments in the books:

  • Professor Quirinus Quirrell claimed to have had an encounter with Vampires in the Black Forest to get some “hands-on” experience dealing with the Dark Arts. This may or may not be true, it’s possible it was a cover to hide his meeting with Lord Voldemort.
  • At Honeydukes, Ron and Hermione decide what kind of sweets to get for Harry. Hermione says no to the blood-flavored lollipops, saying that they must be for vampires.
  • Sanguini is a vampire who attended the Slug Club Christmas party during Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was Eldred Worple’s guest.
  • Gilderoy Lockhart wrote the book, Voyages with Vampires, about his supposed encounters All Categorieswith vampires. The book mentioned one vampire that, after an encounter with Lockhart, could eat nothing but lettuce. But since Lockhart just took the credit for other wizards’ accomplishments, this encounter was either completely made-up, or it happened to someone else.
  • In a Daily Prophet article, Rita Skeeter argues that the Ministry of Magic employees waste time arguing over cauldron thickness when they should be “stamping out vampires.” Percy Weasley rejects Rita’s criticism and points out that paragraph twelve of the Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans clearly forbids such a policy.
  • During Harry’s History of Magic O.W.L., he thinks that his answer to the question on how the Statute of Secrecy was breached in 1749 and what measures were introduced to prevent a recurrence is wrong. He thinks that vampires may have been involved, but cannot remember the details.
  • In 1995, Hagrid had a disagreement with a vampire in a pub in Minsk.
  • As mentioned above, Eldred Worple spent time living among vampires, and wrote the book, Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires.

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).
