THE WALKING DEAD – Down, But Is It Out?
The season eight finale of the wildly popular Horror series snagged the poorest ratings since the first season. Is this a sign of impending collapse? I doubt it. We’ve seen the ratings bottom-out too many times before, only to rebound. THE WALKING DEAD is somewhat like a zombie itself. It keeps coming back. With your standard show, there’s a slow, steady decline in ratings (and often in quality) that leads to inevitable cancellation. It’s like television entropy. But we’ve seen ratings fall for THE WALKING DEAD only to rebound. Fans will stop watching, but then they’ll come back. Usually, once someone checks out of a formerly favored show, that’s it. There’s no boomerang effect. The usual rules don’t apply to THE WALKING DEAD.
Even when the show does get cancelled–if it ever does–that won’t be the end of the franchise. There have been comments made by the series’ soon-to-be former showrunner Scott Gimple that a THE WALKING DEAD feature film is a possibility. I will go out on a limb and say that it is a CERTAINTY. We WILL see that movie, eventually. It will be just like with STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. We’ll get a couple’a three movies, then a complete bigscreen reboot. There could be a break for a while, but the DEAD ain’t going away, even when the series does go away.
