The Zombie Hurricane

Now hurricanes and zombies have something else in common besides New Orleans.

In another example of how ubiquitous in modern language has become the term “zombie”, how “over” it is, to use wrestling and carnie parlance, tropical storm Paulette—which just so happens to be the name of my sister-in-law, though I’m certain there is no connection—is now known as a “Zombie Storm”. That’s because, after first reaching hurricane strength a couple of weeks ago, Paulette petered out, weakening to a tropical storm and then becoming a mere tropical depression. But Paulette came back to life, charging back up to tropical storm strength. Paulette isn’t the first storm to come back from the dead. Hurricane Ivan did it back in 2004. So, wait, Paulette formed just a couple of weeks ago.

They’re now up to using the Greek alphabet to name storms, because they went through the entire English alphabet. That would mean there was a tropical storm for every letter from Q through Z, right? I don’t remember hearing about any of those storms? Where were they? When were they supposed to be around? As Paulette became a Zombie Hurricane, were all those “Ghost Hurricanes”, unseen and unnoticed?
