The Zombie Speaketh
First, THE WALKING DEAD pulled a fast one, a bait-and-switch, with the whole “Rick Grimes is leaving/no he isn’t really” deal, and now this: a talking zombie that isn’t really a zombie at all. The idea that zombies might somehow be “evolving,” regaining intelligence, a theme examined in George Romero’s masterful LAND OF THE DEAD, is a fascinating potential plot device. (No, the zombies in that movie never spoke, but that would be the next logical step if they continued to progress in the direction in which they were headed.) But no, it wasn’t a talking zombie. It was a human disguised as a zombie. One of the Whisperers, the humans who worship the zombies and “dress” like them. In all fairness, the Whisperers have been around in the comics for some time, but this still felt like a fake-out to me.
I have a friend who is as diehard a THE WALKING DEAD fan as there is in existence, and she has admitted that the show has lost its allure for her. “I will keep watching until the bitter end,” she said, “because I’m just that type. But yeah. FEAR THE WALKING DEAD is the much better show these days.” What do you think, deadheads? Is she right?
