THEY ONLY MOVED THE HEADSTONES BUT THEY LEFT ALL THE BODIES

Sound familiar? POLTERGEIST anyone? Only this really happened. And there is worse than mere greed to blame for it.

There is an apartment complex in Tampa, Florida that is built on top of a cemetery. This burial ground was set aside for the interment of black people at the beginning of the 20th Century. Then apparently they forgot it was there and…yeah, right. They didn’t forget. They just didn’t care. They wouldn’t allow black folks to be buried alongside white folks—‘cause you know that differences in the pigmentation of skin remain after death, after all, with even the bones being a different color—then they, and by “they” I mean greedy white businessmen, saw an opportunity to make money off the land, so they parceled it off and sold it. No reason to tell anybody that there were graves there. (Probably the people who now own the land had no idea they were buying land that had served as a cemetery.) If anybody gets haunted over this, my first hope would be that it was the greedy bastards responsible, but probably those bastards are long dead now. It would be ironic and fitting if someone came along and built apartments on top of *their* graves, now wouldn’t it?

Ground-penetrating radar has located 126 coffins thus far. There are probably many more. The Housing Authority has no plans to move the graves, but they may end up moving the people who live in the apartments.
