Do you like the “Toony Terrors” toyline, wherein our most beloved Horror icons are reimagined as cartoon characters (or action figure depictions of cartoon characters)? I dig ‘em, but not all of them. Some of the Toony Terrors don’t look any different, to me, than they do when cast in standard action figure form. The Pennywise figures, for example, especially the Tim Curry version. And the Pinhead figure looks the way Pinhead always looks. Out of the case I’d have a hard time at first glance, or even at second glance, telling if it were a Toony representation. There’s not enough stylization there to really make those figures stand out from other figures. (They do better with the Jason, Freddy, and Leatherface figures.) The point of NECA’s Toony Terrors line is to make the characters look like they could have appeared in an episode of the original SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? TV series.
The third wave of figures scores, in my opinion. The Toony depictions of Ash from EVIL DEAD, Valek from THE NUN, and NOSFERATU do look like they could have been on Scooby’s show. I haven’t been an ardent collector of these figures thus far but I will have to get me one of those Nosferatus.
