Top 10 Buffy Episodes

While organizing my DVD collection I got distracted (as usual) and started going through my Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs, reading the back of each season and reminiscing about all of the fantastic Buffy episodes. And, that there is what inspired today’s post – a look back at ten of the best Buffy episodes! Now, before I go on I should make it clear that these are my personal favorite episodes. Please feel free to leave a comment below letting me know your favorites and why you choose them, I’d love to hear which ones you think are the best.

(In no particular order)

1. Earshot
Season 3, Episode 18

This is the episode where a fight with a demon leaves Buffy with the ability to read minds. This one was absolutely hilarious! Hearing all of the naughty and ridiculous things the Scoobies were thinking was awesome. Loved it! But it was more than just funny, the episode was also touching. Buffy learned that everyone had occasional dark thoughts, everyone hurt and everyone had issues to deal with. I was an insecure high school girl when I first watched this episode, and I could relate to it. I still can, which is why it’s one of my favorites.

2. Hush
Season 4, Episode 10

Hush was the big Emmy-nominated episode where The Gentlemen came to Sunnydale and rendered the town speechless. The entire cast did an incredible job in this episode! They had to convey every emotion through their facial expression and body movement alone since there was no talking in this episode. It was impressive, I can’t imagine telling an entire story without speech is an easy task. I was blown away by this one.

3. Buffy vs. Dracula
Season 5, Episode 1

Hilarious! This episode made me laugh SO much! This is when Buffy battled it out with the legendary Count Dracula, the classic Stoker Dracula. It was glorious! Xander turned into a bug eating servant and Buffy was seduced and put under Dracula’s thrall. It was a fun episode full of fantastic one-liners. The whole episode rocked, I loved the homage to Bram Stoker.

4. The Gift
Season 5, Episode 22

The Gift was one of the most saddening episodes, I admit that cried my eyes out when I saw it. This was the big bad episode where Buffy kills herself to save her sister (the Key) Dawn. You may wonder why such a depressing episode is on my list, well, because it caused a reaction, it triggered emotions. It takes powerful writing and acting to stir emotions in a viewer.

5. Once More, With Feeling
Season 6, Episode 7

This is hands down the best known Buffy episode. Everyone remembers the musical episode! Not only because the cast surprised fans with their amazing singing and dancing, but also because of the huge revelations and drama that went down. Tara discovered that Willow was casting spells on her, everyone found out about Buffy being in heaven and much more. But on top of that, the songs were fantastic! They were highly entertaining in every way, both hilarious and heartbreaking. This was a truly great episode.

6. Angel
Season 1, Episode 7

The episode where Buffy and Angel share their first kiss, need I say more? Angel was so dark and mysterious at this point and we were all rooting for him and Buffy to finally make a move, and they did! Yay! But then she found out what he really was and that’s when all that fun drama began. A Slayer and a vampire… ba ba buuuum!

7. Crush
Season 5, Episode 14

This is the episode where Buffy awakens to find herself chained up at Spike’s place, with Drusilla tied to a pole across from her. Spike professes his love to Buffy and offers to kill his beloved Drusilla to show Buffy how deeply he feels. But Buffy rejects him, and if that wasn’t bad enough, Harmony arrives and shoots Spike with a crossbow. I just loved the drama of it all. Having Spike’s women all in one room together was highly entertaining. Plus, Drusilla is one of my favorite characters so any episode with her in it is an automatic win.

8. Chosen
Season 7, Episode 22

The very last episode of Buffy. It was a sad sad day when the show ended. But in spite of being the last, it was one of the best. I loved how the show ended – it was highly climatic, entertaining, and there were no loose strings. I know many fans hated this episode because of deaths of main characters, because of the destruction of Sunnydale and a million other reasons. But, I personally felt that they ended it well, it felt right to me.

9. Him
Season 7, Episode 6

Another super funny one. This is the episode where Dawn, Buffy, Willow and Anya all fall in love with RJ, a high school football player, forcing Spike and Xander to team up and figure out what the hell is going on. The way the women act and the hilariously ridiculous things they say was all sorts of awesome. This episode had me cracking up the whole time.

10. Something Blue
Season 4, Episode 9

Yet another episode I love for being so hysterical and entertaining. This is the one where Willow tries to get over the loss of Oz by casting a spell that makes her will come true. Instead, she causes Giles to go blind, makes Buffy and Spike fall in love and turns Xander into a demon magnet. So funny!

Those are 10 of my favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes, not my only favorites since there are 7 whole seasons of the show, but they’re all high on my list.

    1. Ooh I agree. Doppelgangland was a great one! I loved naughty vampire Willow. :) Restless on the other hand, I didn’t really care for. Manly because I wasn’t a huge fan of season 4’s main plot. Didn’t really like the whole Adam thing.

  2. When I first saw the title of this article I thought, “Hush” and “The Body.” I loved both of those. Some other great ones mentioned too and makes me want to schedule a Buffy marathon night some day in the future.

    1. The Body also made my cry my eyes out. That was a huge and incredibly depressing episode too.

  3. Halloween in Season 2 is one of my favorits there we she the Sexy (yes with a capital) Willow comming a bit loose I just love it
Buffy kinda made me think of Katrine/Elena/Nina for VD with the dress and the black hair …
