TV Review: NOS4A2 Season Two, Episode 5

“Bruce Wayne McQueen”

Damn. Now *that* was an episode! The only weakness, and it is also the only thing stopping this one from being the best episode of the series to date, is that kid. When the acting is as good as it is from all involved, it just makes it all the more obvious how lousy he is. It was cringe-worthy at times, honestly. Whoever made the decision to cast that kid ought to be fired. There are plenty of talented child actors out there. There is simply no excuse for casting one with such poor skills. They probably chose him because he does bear a resemblance to Ashleigh Cummings (who does her finest work in this week’s episode). But I’d much rather have a kid that looks nothing at all like his supposed-to-be mother and can actually act that the cardboard kiddo they went with. It’s such a shame because everything else about the episode was so good.

I figure the whole season has already been filmed. Could they maybe CGI in some other kid for the rest of the season, though? Or just get somebody to dub his lines if nothing else. When THE STRAIN had to face the realization that they’d cast a kid who couldn’t act, they recast the role. This series should have taken a lesson from their playbook.
