TV Review: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS: “The Orgy”

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS -- Pictured: Natasia Demetriou as Nadja. CR: Matthias Clamer/FX

This is the first episode of the series I cannot rave about. It had some funny moments, some really funny moments, but overall it just wasn’t on the same level as all the previous episodes. All the sex humor felt forced. They were trying too hard to make it funny. And I didn’t care for the “disconnected-ness” of the episode, either. It didn’t seem to fit in with all the others. Have we simply forgotten about that whole killing the Baron, having to appear before the Vampire Council, being sentenced to death thing? And Jeff? Whatever became of Jeff, or of the newly-turned vampire geek girl? “The Orgy” felt like it belonged to a whole other season, or was at least filmed out of sequence. Perusing the ol’ interwebs, I’m not the only one who feels this way, either. “The Orgy” was by far the weakest installment of the series.

What’s going on, then? This episode was directed by Jason Woliner, the same guy who directed “Citizenship,” last week’s episode—and the *second* weakest episode in the series. Have we found the common denominator? What about the writer? “The Orgy” was written by Marika Sawyer. “The Orgy” was the only episode of the series on which she has worked. I think we have solved the mystery. Different people were responsible for this episode than for previous ones. My advice to Jemaine and Taika: don’t use these people again. They don’t Grok your characters the way you do.
