Twilight Author Stupidly Blames Herself for Actor’s Troubles

According to an interview she did with The Times, Stephenie Meyer blames herself for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s troubles. Because, you know, it’s all her fault and totally not theirs. Sigh.

stepheniemeyerWhen asked if she feels guilty about their issues, she told The Times: “Absolutely. Here’s the thing: there are some actors who are looking to be world famous, to be that household name, and although they might discover that there are a lot of negative things involved in that, it’s what they want.

“But that doesn’t apply to Kristen and Rob. That’s what makes it kind of ironic and tragic.”

Meyer admitted the main source of her guilt comes from the fact that they have had to deal with all of the public attention, something that she has mostly escaped from.

She added: “I just don’t think they enjoy the parts [of fame] that other people would. And I totally get that, because it would not be my thing either.

“At the same time – and this is where the guilt comes from – it’s created this nice, peaceful place for me.

“They took all of my heat, which I feel bad about. If they had the choice, I’ve no idea if they’d even do Twilight again. I just don’t know. I think this has all come at a heavy price.”

Personally, I think it’s absolutely absurd for her to feel guilty over their problems. It’s not her fault in the least, but theirs. Look at the Harry Potter cast for example, they are doing pretty well for themselves, and that is their own doing, not Rowling’s. So why would Meyer blame herself for the route Robert and Kristen took? If they didn’t want to be in a big blockbuster hit, then they should have stuck to the indie flicks they were making before Twilight.

Stephenie Meyer is just being ridiculous. But what do you think?

  1. I think she’s pretty clearly talking about her feelings, not her responsibility. As such I find her feelings very human, very understandable and not at all odd. Ridiculous? Maybe. But no more than the rest of the human race, myself included.

    1. I understand where she is coming from and why she feels the way she feels. I just think she’s being ridiculous ;)

  2. I haven’t heard anything else about it but this reminds me a bit of survivor’s guilt. She seems to be empathizing for what they had to deal with, and feels a little guilty about escaping most of the drama and public scrutiny that comes with being a celebrity.

    1. Absolutely spot on. ‘Survivors guilt’ is exactly what this seems like, and it’s not a ridiculous thing to feel at all.

  3. In the beginning Twilight was an indie film. A movie by directed by Catherine Hardwicke, known for Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown, and put out by Summit was an unlikely candidate for a multi-billion dollar franchise. Except that the Twilight phenomenon exploded around it.

Authors tend to escape true celebrity. Stephen King is an exception of course, but he’s cranked out mega-bestsellers that become movies for decades. Neil Gaiman seems to cultivate a public persona.

Sure, it’s a little narcissistic for Meyer to blame herself, but I get it. Pattinson and Stewart have served as lightning rods for both Twi-hate and Twi-obsession. But the kind of things that have soured their relationship are not uncommon for actors with much lower public profiles.

  4. Robert and Kristen having an off-screen relationship added an oil refinery’s worth of fuel to that fire. Imagine what would have happened if Emma Watson had dated Rupert Grint or Daniel Radcliffe!

  5. I THINK THE TWILIGHT SERIES WAS GREAT; EXCEPT FOR SOME THINGS IN BREAKING DAWN PART 2. FOR EXAMPLE; WHEN JACOB WENT TO TELL CHARLIE THAT BELLA WAS OK &…; THE THING THAT DID NOT MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL WAS WHEN JACOB TRANSFORMED INTO A WOLF IN FRONT OF CHARLIE. NOW THEY COULD HAVE SAID THAT BELLA WAS CURED FROM A POWERFUL MEDICINE & SHE WAS BACK HOME WANTING TO SEE HER DAD &…; JACOB DID NOT HAVE TO TURN INTO HIS WOLF FORM TO TRY TO CONVINCE CHARLIE EVERYTHING WAS OK. & RENESMEE; SHE DID NOT HAVE TO BE SEEN BY CHARLIE, OR ELSE MAYBE TELL HIM THAT BELLA WAS PREGNANT & IT WAS NOT A NORMAL PREGNANSY, OR SOMETHING….I WOULD OF DONE THAT SCENE DIFFERENT..TWILIGHT KIND OF REMINDS ME OF MY OWN LIFE IN A WAY. SO ANYONE WHO DOWNGRADES IT WITH VERY FOUL LANGUAGE, WHAT DO YOU KNOW?! LEAVE A GOOD STORY ALONE! GOD BLESS YOU. JESUS CHRIST LOVES YOU. MAY HE GUIDE YOUR HEART…………
