Twilight Films May Not End at Breaking Dawn! Possible Sequels Says Studio!

On November 16, 2012 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the final film in the Twilight franchise, will hit theaters and that will be the end of the Twilight movies – or is it? According to Jon Feltheimer, Chief Executive of Lions Gate Entertainment, there may be some Twilight sequels on the way.

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga may end at Breaking Dawn, but considering how much money the studio is making on the film adaptations it is no surprise that they are considering ways to make that cash flow last as long as possible. Jon Feltheimer sees further potential in the franchise.

Lionsgate bought Twilight studio Summit Entertainment for more than $400 million last week, and one of Feltheimer’s first proclamations was to suggest his company wants to maximize profits from its newly acquired asset. After all, The Twilight films have so far generated almost $2.5 billion at the global box office.

“I’m anticipating Breaking Dawn Part 2 being $700m-plus in worldwide box office,” Feltheimer told the LA Times. They then asked him if he would like to see the series continue, he said: “It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700m-plus doesn’t have ongoing value. It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is: ‘Boy I hope so.'”

Now, while the possibility of more Twilight films may make the Twi-hards scream with joy, it may not go over so well with author Stephenie Meyer. She has published four novels in the series, along with spin-off title The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, and Meyer has stated that she has no plans to continue writing about Twilight. So what exactly will the studio make into a movie? There are no books left, except for the novella and it does not seem like an obvious choice for a big-screen transfer, as it is not told from the perspective of any of the main characters in the Twilight series. However, it is possible that the studio may do some hardcore edits to make the novella into box office gold.

I can see the studio doing their best to write their own Twilight story, just so that can keep the money coming. I’m sure if they did do that they would piss off every fan loyal to Meyer and her original work. After all, when L. J. Smith was fired from The Vampire Diaries and her publisher brought on a ghostwriter to continue her tale, her fans went into a rage! They want Smith telling the story and no one else. Can you imagine how big and bad it would be if someone else tried to write Meyer’s story? Yeah, lots of pissed off fans.

I don’t know how the studio plans to make more Twilight films, but if they do, it may go very VERY badly for them. Or, who knows, it could be amazing.

What do you guys think of more Twilight films after Breaking Dawn Part 2?

  5. What Lions Gate needs to understand is that for fans there is an identity between Twilight and Stephenie Meyer. Twilight is not an open-ended universe like Star Trek, Star Wars, or Stargate, a sandbox for others to play in. Some franchises are so closely associated with their creator that adding a new voice can only displease fans. Witness Dune, or Hitchhiker’s.

Whether one is a fan like me or despises Twilight, it has be admitted that there is a very distinct voice behind the series. Meyer did not come from a background of being steeped in vampire lore gleaned from popular novels and films, which is part of the reason why her vampire mythos is so fresh. (Note: The ‘vampire police’ whining about fangs, sunlight, avoiding human blood etc. is still nonsense.) I think the critics are right; there is some crypto-Mormon influence in her vampire lore. (As an atheist, I say that there’s nothing wrong with that; creative people bring to the table who they are.) And there is a pervasive chastity and traditionalism that is part of why Twilight has a tone quite different from, say, Blood Ties or Vampire Diaries. And no writer beholden to the corporate concerns of franchise-building could have written the insanity that occurs in Breaking Dawn, the template of which is the unpublished first Twilight sequel, Forever Dawn. Breaking Dawn is the work of an uncensored author following her dreams and passions where they take her, not of a hired ringer in a YA factory.

If Meyer writes any future Twilight sequels, prequels, or spin-offs, I’m interested. If these appear with Meyer’s authorship, I’ll be dismayed. A lot of Twilight fans feel the same way. Lions Gate would do well not to kill the golden goose and resist the temptation to oversaturate the Twilight market, dilute quality, and in doing so stoke fan burnout and backlash.

      1. Maybe they’ll film my favorite Meyer work, “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner”.

Why is this novella my favorite?

Stephenie Meyer didn’t write Bree’s story through her “Edward-colored glasses”.

        1. Bree Tanner is nicely grim and brutal. And Fred rules.

Truth to tell Midnight Sun may be my favorite Twilight book; Edward’s self-loathing and bloodlust are described from his own perspective, giving the love story a darker undercurrent.

  9. I’m thinking it’s a nice thought, but at the same time I’d like to see some other books made into vampire films.

  11. I’d be only too happy to write the screenplay for the film about Bella and Edward’s divorce. Bella and Edward Cullen fight for custody of Renesmee, but then the Volturi step in and award full custody of Renesmee Cullen to Jacob Black. Setting the stage for an epic battle of the Cullen clan versus the Volturi…
[sarcasm font] …where Aro reveals his true identify to be Lucian, leader of the Lycans [/sarcasm font].

Summit can send me a big check and I’ll rewrite my forthcoming novel for them as
    “Twilight: Broken Hearts”.

  12. NO MORE TWILIGHT!!! its ruined vampirism enough, and they dont need to make any more money then they already have off the movies. besides, if they want to make sequels, they need to find people who can ACT, not like the current so-called “actors”.

  13. I think it be neat to watch Renemee Grown up and then a love spat on her love life the half human and vampire and Jacob hmm I would love to see that. If you read the book you know what I am talking about….. I think Meyer left it open, I do. ??

  14. Twilight DOES have some eye opening moments such as when Bella announces her engagement to Edward’s family and one of his sisters gives her a friendly hug as though to say “welcome to the family!”(can anyone imagine Bela Lugosi or Chistopher Lee’s Dracula doing that???) so yes I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the franchise!
