I didn’t get the chance to catch THE UNHOLY over the weekend. I wanted to, but couldn’t find the time to squeeze it into my schedule. I plan to go next weekend. There aren’t any new movies releasing next weekend, so it’ll work out just as well.
I did, initially, think the decision on the part of the suits in offices to release THE UNHOLY on Easter weekend was a clever one. Possibly inappropriate, but clever. I’m hearing the movie actually puts a positive spin on the whole religious aspect, so it would seem the timing is more clever than sacrilegious. (I wouldn’t be one to complain too much, anyway, seeing as I’m the guy who went directly from a Good Friday service one year to catch the late showing of GRINDHOUSE.) They made a big thing out of it, too, advertising that they were releasing the movie on the holiest weekend of the year, capitalizing on the irony.
It may not have been a good move for them, though, in terms of finances. Yes, it was Easter weekend, but the movie also had to contend with the juggernaut (actually two juggernauts; actually *three* juggernauts) that is GODZILLA VS. KONG. (If you’re following our sister site DARKNESS.COM—and you really should be—you’ve seen my review and coverage for that movie ad nauseam.) And frankly, GVK clobbered everything else at the box office. Still, THE UNHOLY is a relatively low-budget affair, so it won’t have to make too much to turn a profit.
I’ll let you all know what I think of it as soon as I’ve seen it.
