A few months back it was announced that City of Bones, the first book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, was being made into movie, and every website reporting the news was all like “Yay! A new vampire movie!” Even I (someone who had never read the books) jumped on the bandwagon and wrote about the upcoming flick.
When I wrote about the movie all those months ago, I admitted that while I knew there were vampires in the book, I didn’t know how big of a part they played – now I know. They don’t play a big part. City of Bones is about Clary, a seemingly ordinary girl who discovers that demons and demon hunters, called Shadowhunters, exist. She is thrown into an epic battle between old Shadowhunters and young Shadowhunters and while vampires and all other non-demonic beasties (like werewolves) have a part in this war, they are not the stars of this book. Simply put, yes there are vampires in City of Bones, but their scenes are so small and few that I seriously doubt they will even be included in a big movie.
Sad, but that’s how it is. Even without vampires being a big part of the story, it’s still an AMAZING tale. I loved the world the author created and I look forward to the film, even if the vampires aren’t the stars of the show.
Have any of you read City of Bones? Do you think vampires will be included in the movie or do you think they will they simply cut them out? Personally, I hope they include the vampires a little bit. Even if they aren’t the main characters, it would be fantastic to at least get a little glimpse of them in the movie.
UPDATE: I have now read book two and three in the series and can say that in the future the vampires play a bigger role in the books. They are nothing in book one, but slowly, very slowly, they become more important. So, it’s possible we may have vampires after all.
