Vampire Book Challenge!

Being the bibliophile that I am, I love to read, write and talk about books. I am a hardcore book junkie. That said, we’re having ourselves a fangtastic vampire book discussion today! Actually, it’s a bit of a book challenge. I challenge you, my wonderful readers, to list off three vampire books and share a little about them. They don’t have to be your favorite books, they don’t even have to be books you have read. Simply tell us about three vampire books. Maybe it was a book you read and loved, a book you read and hated, or books you want to read. Then tell us why. Do this and give yourself 10 awesome points. Bonus points if you comment on someone else’s comment. Let’s have a giant book discussion! Maybe you read the book someone else hasn’t read yet – tell them what you thought. Maybe you read a book others here have read – do you agree with their thoughts? Share and let your book-lovin’ voices be heard!

The_DarkangelHere are my three vampire books:

Bloodthirsty by Flynn Meaney
Hilarious! This young adult book had me laughing out loud for real. The book is about Finbar Frame, who is an awkward sixteen-year-old who happens to be allergic to the sun. He notices that all the female students at his school are obsessed with a vampire romance novel called Bloodthirsty, so Finbar decides to become a vampire, minus the whole blood sucking part. This book was awesome!

The Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce
Ok, I am cheating and counting this trilogy as one book. This incredibly captivating trilogy is a must-read for everyone, not just vampire fans. It was published decades ago and has won an assortment of awards. Here is the blurb for the first book: “The Darkangel, a vampire of astounding beauty and youth, can only summon his full power when he finds his 14th and final bride. But for Aeriel, whom he kidnaps to serve his brides, there is something about him–something beyond his obvious evil–that makes her want to save him rather than destroy him.” It sounds like a normal book, right? But it’s so strange. It’s set in a fantasy world unlike any other. A truly unusual, but magnificent book.

Vampire Haiku by Ryan Mecum
This short book is beautiful and highly entertaining. The entire short story is told through haikus. And each page is stunning (major points to the artistic team behind this one). It tells the tale of a vampire who was turned while aboard the Mayflower.

And those are my random vampire books! Now it’s your turn!

  1. ok i know i’m a bit of a cheat but you opened the door moonlight, my first pick is the entire black dagger brotherhood series, it’s the first book series that i ever completed, i love how jr ward was able to create her very on mythology without disregarding completely the original vampire mythos; i personally could do without all the sex scene but thats just me and the rest of the story is really intruging
second pick would be blood bound from the mercy thompson series (i know the series is more werewolf incline but this book is more vampire turned) it’s a great book with a walker hunting down a creature that i can’t say so not spoil it. and my third pick must be dracula i personally have never read the book (lowers head as shakes it in shame) but i mean it is the father of modern vampire books and so i will read some day just haven’t gotten around to it yet

    1. lol, I really like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series too.

As for Dracula… I love what that book did for vampires, but the book itself was kind of boring. At least I thought so.

  2. Ok, perhaps it’s a bit of a cheat, but I wrote one, so I’ll have to mention that one, first! ‘Sorrows’ is book one of the Rogue Saga, and has vampires, donors, shapeshifting rael-shaa, and quantum reality travel, among other things. It’s about recovery from trauma, and the importance of relationships. It’s got vampire cops. It’s got romance. It’s the sort of genre mishmash that traditional publishers rarely touch. :) It will be available for the first time in just a few days!

The next book I’ll mention is ‘Blood Trail’ by Tanya Huff. Tanya Huff’s books were turned into an (unfortunately) short-lived series called Blood Ties. Blood Trail is the second book, in which Henry and Vicki have to rescue a pack of werewolves from a killer.

Third, ‘Quincy Morris, Vampire,’ by PN Elrod. This book is hilarious and entertaining, and simply enjoyable in every way. You can guess the gist of the plot by the title! PN Elrod’s good-guy vampires are tons of fun.

    1. I love Tanya Huff’s series! I think the show would have done better if it had come out during the vampire craze, but it aired right before vampires got big, so it didn’t do too well.

    2. loved the Tanya huff books&liked blood ties well enough. when it comes to p.n. elrod im a jack flemming fan all the way! I love those. the era is great

  3. Like Donna, I wrote a book as well. Not a very good book, mind you, but it does have vampires and death oracles and tree-hugging vegetarian hippy witches with the ability to throw fire balls, so there’s that. It’s called Mercy Bound by Karen Plaisance and is available through Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon. Feed a starving artist and feel good about yourself.

The second book I’d like to mention will probably get me stoned-and not in a good way. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The first one, not the series. I didn’t like it, probably because the plot could best be summed up as: Bella does something dumb, Bella gets into trouble, Edward saves her. Rinse repeat. we don’t even meet the villain until the very end of the book. And to be honest, the sparkling thing kind of turned me off.

The third book is the one that got me interested in the genre: Interview With a Vampire by Anne Rice. The fact that a good chunk of the plot took place in New Orleans is what drew me to it, but I also like how the portray vampires. They’re not human. They’re monsters. Even Louis, who fights against his nature realizes this-one of the major reasons he’s tired of his existence.

    1. if new orleans led you to interview you should try the dark-hunter series a good deal of the books happen in new orleans

  4. 1. VAMPIRE KISSES: THE BEGINNING by Ellen Schreiber

Blurb: A new guy in town.
    Rumors of vampires.
    Dangerous first love.
This is where it all begins. . . .
The mansion on top of Benson Hill has stood empty for years. But one day it seems to be occupied, and its mysterious, handsome inhabitant Alexander Sterling becomes the source of much talk around town. Raven, a vampire-obsessed Goth-girl who has always considered herself an outsider in “Dullsville,” is determined to uncover the truth surrounding the secretive Alexander. As she gets to know him, and their spark intensifies, Raven finds herself in some unanticipated situations. Can Alexander make her lifelong dream come true? But love always has its complications—especially when it can only be awakened at nightfall.
The first three books in Ellen Schreiber’s bestselling Vampire Kisses series capture the thrill of a most unusual romance.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK

This is probably the most romantic YA vampire book I ever read! I can relate with the main character, Raven, who’s obsessed with vampires. Plus the hot vampire Alexander, who’s very mysterious and protective. Now who wouldn’t fall for that?

    2. THIRST SERIES by Christopher Pike

    Blurb: As to blood –
ah, blood, the whole subject fascinates me. I do like that as well, warm and dripping, when I am thirsty….
Alisa has been in control of her urges for the five thousand years she has been a vampire. She feeds but does not kill, and she lives her life on the fringe to maintain her secret. But when her creator returns to hunt her, she must break her own rules in order to survive.
Her quest leads her to Ray. He is the only person who can help her; he also has every reason to fear her. Alisa must get closer to him to ensure her immortality. But as she begins to fall in love with Ray, suddenly there is more at stake than her own life….

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK

I haven’t read this yet. I have the complete set of this series. The blurb looks very interesting and the covers are pretty so as their spine…

    3. MARKED (House of Night Collection) by P.C. Cast + Kristin Cast

Blurb: The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird’s world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire — that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny–with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE BOOK

I have been wanting to read this ever since Vampire Kisses. But I wasn’t able to find the first installment, Marked. So I just waited until a copy is available. Unfortunately, my TBR list is very long when I bought the book so I just have to read it some other time. I also love the covers of this series — dark and intimidating.

**I also posted this Vampire Book Challenge on my book blog!

    1. I haven’t read the Thirst series or Vampire Kisses, but I have read House of Night and I hate that series. I enjoyed it at first, but then it just went bad and from bad to worse.

      1. Vampire Kisses is good! I’m looking forward to find time to read Thirst.. one of my friends said House of Night was only good at first then became bad… but i’m still giving it a chance though. Hehe

  5. I loved House of Night, but that is because of what they attempt to describe Vampires as and the whole time they are spelling it vampYre for a reason referring to the magickal kind. They have run away with themselves though into the world of Wiccan magick and Native American myths, and distracted themselves from the main theme of Vampyres, leaving the older readers wanting for something with a little more substance. That having been said, the only Vampire books that I don’t see here that I know of is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. Which I liked, and that she used the Romanian words for vampire (strigoii and moroii) give them a few more awesome points. And there is The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod by Heather Brewer, which I have not read but it is on my TBR list too.
