Vampire Hunting on ‘Destination Truth’

Over at Werewolves.com I chatted with our readers about Destination Truth, a show that I recently learned existed. It’s currently in its fourth season, so yeah, I’m a bit behind. Ah well, anyway, the show airs over on SyFy and explores a wide variety of myths and legends around the world – from werewolves to the yeti. After writing about the show’s search for werewolves I did some digging and discovered that they also went in search of vampires as well. Woot!

From the official website:

“Led by intrepid world-adventurer Josh Gates, each episode of Destination Truth takes viewers on a trek across the globe as Josh investigates stories of the unexplained. Accompanied by his small crew, Josh dives into the local cultures and searches for clues to the existence of strange creatures and paranormal phenomena.

In the current season, Josh will travel to some of the most extreme locations on Earth, including the isolated Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and the heart of the world’s worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl. Viewers will also ride along on unprecedented investigations, including the world’s first overnight exploration of King Tut’s cursed tomb and pitch-black dives in ancient Caribbean caves.”

In the second season of the show Josh traveled to the Philippines to investigate the aswang, a vampire greatly feared in the country.

“Aswangs are ghoulish creatures in Philippines, and, in fact, are the most feared supernatural creatures in a nation already rich in colorful folklore. They find their way into a wide variety of myths and stories. Aswangs feed on people and stolen cadavers, leaving behind facsimiles that they create out of tree trunks and other plant materials. It is their appetite for children, however, that really gets the attention of believing locals.”

More about the episode here.

I still haven’t checked the show out because while it sounds amazing, I have been hearing a lot of mixed reviews of it. Have any of you seen it? If so, what did you think?

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

  3. Destination Truth is really a great show. Josh Gates is funny and it’s always an interesting adventure no matter what they are searching for. IMO it’s the only show worth watching on SyFy anymore.
