Vampire or Victim: Premature Burial

Modern medicine makes it easy to determine if someone who looks dead really is dead— not in a coma or otherwise still alive. In the old days, it wasn’t so easy.

Can you imagine anything more horrifying? You wake up in complete darkness. You try to move and find that you can’t. Not more than a few inches. Your scrambling hands and kicking feet discern the closeness of your confines. You find above you something hard, flat—and only a few inches above your face. With a sickening, primal rush of fear, you immediately understand what has happened to you: You have been buried alive. If you live in the First World (and if you’re reading this it’s a safe bet), you don’t really have to worry about this happening to you. Modern embalming techniques guarantee that no one goes into a grave when they are in fact still living.

It wasn’t that long ago, however, that this constituted a very real fear for people, so much so that they devised all sorts of ways to safeguard against it. Lacking today’s sophisticated medieval equipment, and often dealing with some serious outbreak or other, doctors could and did miss the faintest heartbeat, the shallowest breathing. When graves were opened and it was discovered that the body inside had moved, what other explanation was there except that the victim was a vampire?

  1. Some people had diseases like catalepsy. A person will have rigid muscles, decreased sensitivity to pain, and fixed posture. Plus body functions like breathing are slowed down. In history, people did not have machines to check if a person was breathing. Someone would see a person lying on the ground and have the body be very stiff and they assumed the person was dead.
