I’m gonna just admit it. As much as I love Forry Ackerman, I was never a fan of Vampirella. I thought the character he kinda, sorta, somewhat created was, well, if I’m honest, kinda stupid. In fairness, it was meant to be, but the character soon lost any aspirations of campy cleverness and became just T-and-A on display, preying on the hormones of teenage boys to shill magazines. Now as a teenage boy I certainly had nothing against T-and-A; I still don’t. But I require more of my comic book characters than just big knockers and a skimpy costume. Writer Dan Abnett does seem to be trying to add a bit more substance to the flimsy infrastructure with his new series, VAMPIRELLA: THE DARK POWERS.
Here’s the official spin: “The Project, an interdimensional collective of superheroes, has found their newest potential recruit, and she’s…Vampirella?! Faced with a whole new set of rules, will the Daughter of Drakulon be able to fit in with this crew of strait-laced and square-jawed men and women in spandex? In a tale with her biggest stakes yet, thousands of planets, billions of lives, and reality itself could be in Vampi’s hands!”
“Drakulon”, by the way, is the alien planet where all the inhabitants are vampires. Yeah, it still sounds stupid. Think I’ll skip this one.
