Let me begin this little treatise by cautioning you all to never trust Rotten Tomatoes. A website that aggregates all critics’ scores, makes it easy for you to get the consensus. It sounds like a great idea. The problem lies in the execution. The majority of critics don’t write the words “positive review” or “negative review” in their reviews. They don’t post little thumbs-up or thumbs-down emojis with them. This leaves it to someone to read through those reviews and determine whether or not they are positive or negative—and the criteria they use for this purpose is notoriously flexible. For example, many of those “bad” reviews for BATMAN VERSUS SUPERMAN weren’t really bad at all. What I’m saying is, RT is biased and inconsistent. I never go by a RT score, and you shouldn’t either.
Anyway, I wouldn’t be mentioning that site at all if it weren’t for the little blurb it has attached to its non-review of VLAD THE IMPALER: THE TRUE STORY OF DRACULA, which states: “While many think Dracula was a pure concoction of writer Bram Stoker, he may actually be inspired by a historical figure named Vlad Dracul…” No, lamebrains. Dracul was Vlad’s FATHER. DraculA means “son of.” And he wasn’t POSSIBLY inspired by Vlad DraculA, he WAS inspired by him, at least in name. See, you can’t even trust RT’s blurb writers to get it right!
