What Comes After GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE?

That there will be a sequel would seem a given at this point, but that there would be a sequel was a given back in 1989, too, and, well, it took a while, didn’t it? Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another thirty-plus frikkin’ years for the next installment. I suspect we won’t. But what shape will the next GHOSTBUSTERS flick take? (Shape of what? Form of what? As Zan and Jayna would phrase it.)

Will the originals return? If so, I expect they will have roles similar in size to this latest film, bigger than cameos but rather scarce overall. (It was worth the payoff to see them return at the end, though.) The locus and onus would logically fall to Phoebe to take point as the new de facto leader of a new team. She’s certainly smart enough and capable enough. She’s Egon Spengler made over. Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor and Logan Kim’s Podcast are natural fits for a new team. Celeste O’Connor’s Lucky will need some fleshing-out if she’s going to stick around. Her personality doesn’t shine through like the others in AFTERLIFE. Given how hard it was to get Bill Murray to commit to this sequel, will he be willing to return? More to the point, could they do the prospective sequel if he doesn’t? Now they can, yes. The young Busters have legs to stand on their own at this point, with a little support from the legacy characters. (Not that we don’t want Murray back, of course.)

My main suggestion for the proposed sequel regards the villain. I say, bring back Vigo the Carpathian! No, actor Norbert Grupe is no longer with us, and we wouldn’t want him back in the role if he was. But recasting the role would be easy-peasy. Since Gozer returned in GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE then it only makes sense that Vigo would show up for the next one.
