What’s the Big Deal with VD?

Later on, I’ll be doing the Vampire Diaries synopsis, which, I know you love, because I know you missed me, –and normally I wouldn’t tell you, but I’m just so excited about being able to do it again! But I have to say, all the hub-bub about the new advertising campaign for The Vampire Diaries. My boss and I have called the show “VD” for so long, and yeah, we realize the pun. We did the first time we used to abbreviation. And okay, it’s a little childish, but who cares? Why the big controversy, over the “Catch VD” slogan. I think it’s damn funny, and too cute. Anyone who thinks they actually are promoting venereal disease needs a slap.

Here are some of my favorite exclamations over the new Vampire Diaries promo posters for ‘Catch VD’:

“…network types, of course, know exactly what they’re doing. After all, they learned long ago that not only do their shows have to push the boundaries, but their marketing efforts have to as well.” – NY Daily News

“That’s right. The network’s marketing department has equated watching their supernatural drama, which stars Ian Somerhalder, to catching a “venereal disease.” Genius.” – All Headline News

“Catch VD”, if not already figured out, stands for “Catch Vampire Diaries“. It appears not only in the TV spots but also on a Billboard erected in Times Square next to ads for The Disney Store. Problem is, for people who live in the ’80s and ’90s, it also stands for “Venereal Disease” which youngsters now recognize as STD.”AceShowbiz

“The CW’s The Vampire Diaries is one of the BEST dramas in a pool of reality shows and wannabes, so it’s a bit upsetting they opted for aMelrose Place “Menage A Tues” kind of promotion.” [sic] – TV Somniac

The video comes just one day after EW.com’s report on the show’s new billboard campaign urging fans to “Catch VD.” Asked whether this is yet another attempt to lure viewers with racy marketing, The CW’s Department of Double Entendres had no comment.” – Entertainment Weekly

Actually, they did have a comment:

“VD simply stands for ‘Vampire Diaries’, and anyone who thinks otherwise should probably get themselves checked out.” – Spokesperson for CW.

So yeah, as you can see, all that over the ‘Got Wood?’ and ‘Catch VD’ promos and billboards, –and the fact that they put it next to a Disney store cracks me up. If you shop at the Disney store, and you’re old enough to know what VD is, guess what? You’re either a parent, or a pedophile, and in the latter case, you’ve got no right to complain about television advertising. In the former case, don’t act like you answer every question your kids ask you. “What does VD stand for Mommy?” “Very Dumb” should be your answer. Or one of any other thousand things that start with V and D. Climb off your pedestals people, it’s harmless, and plenty funny. Everyone else who has a problem with it, just shut up, –it’s a pun.

  1. If you’re kid asks what VD means just say it measn Vampire Diaries whats so difficult about that you can tell you’re kids that santaclaus is real well then lie about the VD to !

  2. i think anyone who overreacts to VD is just plan stupid. after all there are alternate meanings for a lot of things in life and i dont see people getting worked up over it. i mean so what? VD can stand for a disease if youre in the medical world and actually know what it means, or you can be a teenager and be referring to a show you know Vampire Diaries. Geez, when my friend and i found out we nearly laughed ourselves silly and started calling it TVD when we were around older people just so they would lay off.
