Whedon returns To BUFFY

This would be bigger news to me if I followed the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comic book. I know, I know, how can a diehard vampire mark like me NOT follow the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comic book? Honestly, I’m not THAT big on Buffy. Don’t misunderstand me, now. I dig it. I watched it when it was on television and enjoyed it. “Hush” and the episode where Dracula showed up are my two all-time favorites. (Did you know that Dracula was portrayed by actor Rudolph Martin, who also portrayed the character in the seriously underrated made-for-cable movie DRACULA: THE DARK PRINCE? The latter ranks ahead of the recent DRACULA UNTOLD and even BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA in its ability to weave together the real-life history of Vlad Dracula III and Bram Stoker’s vampire.) I just don’t read the comics.

The upcoming twelfth season, to be titled “The Reckoning,” will be co-written by Whedon along with Christos Gage (himself a gifted storyteller and Buffy regular) and will involve Buffy traveling through time–which sounds neat, actually. I might have to check it out. Is it necessary to have read all the previous Buffy comics to jump into the new series? Will I be able to follow the storyline, know what’s going on and who’s who? Or is the whole thing a plot to make me buy previous issues?
