Who is Your Favorite Vampire?

Our beloved creatures of the night are lurking everywhere, in the darkened scenes of films, between the bloodied pages of books, in chilling video games… vampires are everywhere. Out of the many vampires haunting our favorite stories – which one is your favorite? Is it the lead in a vampire romance? An evil monster in a horror film? Who is your favorite vampire?

I have racked my brain trying to answer this question, I have well over a hundred vampire books on my shelves and then even more in my Kindle, so I have a LOT to choose from. The easiest way to answer is that, like most, my favorites change with age. So I have many faves. During my pre-teen days my absolute favorite vampire was Aubrey from Amelia Atwater-Rhode’s young adult novel Demon in My View. Aubrey was and still is that teenage girl’s dream – dark and mischievous, mysterious, deadly and absolutely gorgeous. Goodness, I read this book so many times that I ended up buying a second copy of it since my old copy was so worn.

Then in my early teens I discovered Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and I had another favorite – Marius de Romanus. I know that most everyone adores Lestat, but I always leaned towards the wise Marius. He was deeply intelligent and a lover of art. I couldn’t get enough of the scholar.

Over the years my favorites list grew and grew and now there are so many I can’t possibly name them all. Aubrey and Marius stick out most in my mind though. Although, I have recently fallen in love with the vampires in J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I can’t pick one I like the most though. Her vampires as a whole are a favorite because of how fantastic and believable they are. Not the classic undead creatures, but an entirely different species with extraordinary powers and a fascinating world. I love it.

Now it’s your turn! Who is your favorite vampire? Or are you like me and have many favorites?

  2. My favorites are Lestat and Spike. I just can’t enough of those two. They’re both so charming, funny and the always anti-hero. I also love Marius. Him and David will always be my other favorites among ‘The Vampire Chronicles’. I was wondering if you had a list of your favorite vampire books? I’m looking for some new ones to read. Will definitely check out the ones you listed above.

  7. I loved the Anne Rice vampires, but my favorite has to be my own creation; Carter. He is my vampire hero in my Vampire trilogy: Silentheart, and Silent Madness. Silent Blood is in the works and will publish next year.

  8. My recent fave would have to be Damon Salvatore. He just has that right combination of naughtiness and vulnerability that makes him irresistible. And those eyes… Oh my. Loved Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac in Interview with a Vampire and in some small ways, Kirsten Dunst’s Claudia inspired my character, Angeline, in Vampire Origins. If there are any fellow writers of vampire fiction here, you might be interested to know I’ve started a LinkedIN group where we can discuss writing this amazing genre in more detail.
