Would You Pay $10,000 for a Vampire Book?

Being the curious book lover that I am I did a search on Amazon.com (my obsession) for the most expensive vampire books on the site, and what I found was SO not what I was expecting!  The most expensive vampire book on the list was actually four books in one and the cost was a ridiculous $10,000! Would you pay that much for four books? I wouldn’t, especially since I don’t even know of the author.

The four books with the big price tag can be found HERE, they are from The Undead Series by MaryJanice Davidson. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the price is so high, unfortunately, the seller doesn’t say. Crazy.

But that’s not where the crazy ends, for there are MANY more vampire books on the list with insane prices. Have a look.

Price: $4,500The Vampire Chronicles and New Tales of the Vampires by Anne Rice
This one shocked me as well, it seemed like an insane price for a few books, however, this book had a description and after reading it the price made sense. That big price tag will buy you not one book, but 227 books, many of which are first editions, in 19 languages. Ok, $4,500 for 227 books makes sense, I wouldn’t actually buy it, but it makes sense.

Price: $3,779.63Moderne Vampyre by Britta Radkowsky
Not only is that price high, it’s really random – 63 cents, why? All I can tell from the info on this book is that it’s in German and it’s about vampires. Who would pay nearly four grand on a German book?

Price: $2,475The Eternal Rose by Derek McGrath
This is another one I don’t understand, it appears to be nothing more than some unknown author’s first book, so why the high price? No idea.

Price: $2,475The Vampire Sonnets by John T. Carney
It’s a book of poetry that costs over two thousand dollars! And oddly enough, you can buy a different version of this book for $14.99. Once again there is no description to tell you why the other version is so costly.

Ok ok, I’ll end this madness now. There were loads more vampire books that cost thousands, and strangely enough, many of them were by self-published authors. Hmm… I’m wondering if the high cost was some kind of pathetic publicity stunt. You never know. There were a few others by famous authors, like another Anne Rice collection, which once again made sense since they were rare leather bound signed copies. But the Anne Rice ones are the only prices I understand, the others, not so much.

What do you guys think of all of these insanely expensive vampire books?

Moonlight (aka Amanda) loves to write about, read about and learn about everything pertaining to vampires. You will most likely find her huddled over a book of vampire folklore with coffee in hand. Touch her coffee and she may bite you (and not in the fun way).

  1. i might actually buy the anne rice collection for my private library. or donate to public libraries around where i live.

  2. I need to know more about the .63 cents. Maybe it’s just a currency conversion deal, but if $3,779.63 has another meaning I’m curious to find out.

But yeah, I don’t even think my mom would pay $2,000 for a book I wrote, and she loves me. haha.

  3. The most expensive french vampire books (still with amazon) seems to be Judas ou le vampire surréaliste, written by Ernest de Gengenbach : 237 euros ( 338,93 dollar, according to the Yahoo Currency Converter).

  4. I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for fictional vampire books. What a silly waste of money (at least to me).

@Vladkergan – hmmm. Now, you’ve piqued my interest.

  6. @Kelly : according to my girlfriend, who add it in our bookcase many years ago, and despite the title, its not really a vampire-related novel.

    1. Thanks, Vladkergan. The most valuable (monetarily speaking) book that I have is a book on Munsell color theory. The next is a Sumerian Lexicon. Lol.

    1. Thanks for sharing those beautiful photos with us, Vlad. My favorite is the second Dracula book.

I love books. And I love old books. I love the art…
