Yes, Your Pet CAN See Ghosts

Color me skeptical. This headline proclaims that “Science confirms” that cats and dogs can see spirits. In other words, when your dog starts barking at nothing, or your cat hisses at nothing, it means there is some form of etheric entity about. Conversely, it could mean you have a psychotic cat or dog. (This latter is far more likely in the case of a cat than a canine.) Perhaps it would behoove us to keep a pet around as a sort of spiritual watchdog, to warn us if a malevolent spook, demented demon, or malicious psychic vampire is about and up to no good.

What the scientific study actually says is that pets and “mammals are thought to see in ultraviolet (UV) light [which] is the wave length beyond the visible light from red to violet that humans can see. Humans have a lens that blocks UV from reaching the retina. It was previously thought that most mammals have lenses similar to humans.

Scientists studied the lenses of dead mammals, including cats, dogs, monkeys, pandas, hedgehogs, and ferrets. By researching how much light passes through the lens to reach the retina, they concluded that some mammals previously thought not to be able to see UV actually can.” Unless we have substantive proof, however, that ghosts and spooks are visible in UV light–one would think the exact opposite should be true of spiritual vampires, having that legendary aversion to sunlight as they do–we’re no closer than we were to convincing people to buy a pet to safeguard against supernatural threats.

  1. NONE of this surprises me to begin with! Mediums and other forms of psychics such as exorcists have long noted that certain classes of people(in addition to animals) are markedly more sensitive to paranormal influences- children below the age of reason, women. Case in point, when I was staying with a cousin in Philadelphia for thanksgiving, a dog they kept barked every day after it saw me. But when the day came for me to fly home to London, I noted that it inexplicably fell silent!
