Zombie Pumpkins

Because it’s still Halloween, dammit! Halloween season runs from the first of October until Thanksgiving. It’s just like Mardi Gras, as one astute reader pointed out. It’s a whole season of celebration. October 31st is just the highpoint, along with, more and more, November 2nd, the Dia de los Muertos, the “Day of the Dead.” But even sticklers who want their holidays over and done with as quickly as possible, the kinds of folks who start taking their Christmas trees down at midnight on December 26th, will have to acknowledge that pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, even, still have a place in traditional Thanksgiving decorations. Thus, even though I am writing these words a full five days after October 31st, it is still in keeping with the atmosphere of the day, still apropos. So suck it, haters.

The rest of you, feast your eyes on these awesome creations, zombie jack-o-lanterns and full-sized pumpkin zombies. They are the work of artist Ray Villafane. Or were; as these photographs, taken at the New York Botanical Gardens, are a few years old, I don’t know if Mr. Villafane has recreated them. Surely they are not still extant, as carved pumpkins do not have much of a shelf life. Even if they persist, zombie-like, there’s only so much rotting they can do before they collapse under their own weight.
