Where Rob Zombie movies are concerned, the guy’s hit or miss, and unfortunately he’s more often miss than hit. THE DEVIL’S REJECTS was fantastic; it’s predecessor, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, not so much. LORDS OF SALEM and his HALLOWEEN 2 were embarrassingly bad, while the only good parts of his version of HALLOWEEN were those he came up with on his own, the parts that were original to him. The parts that were a retread of John Carpenter’s far superior original just fell flat. In terms of his music, if you like one Rob Zombie song you’re probably gonna like ’em all, since they all sound the same, either sped up or slowed down. They’re catchy, but I’d hardly call them Art. Behind all the tattoos and the Rockstar image, though, the guy’s a huge honkin’ geek. He and I would doubtless be great friends if we frequently associated with one another. And the guy sure does have good taste in movies. (Not in MAKING films, as mentioned. In terms of what films he loves.)
Here are his top five. Bela Lugosi’s in every one of them. DRACULA. MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE. THE BLACK CAT. ISLAND OF LOST SOULS. And he loved WHITE ZOMBIE so much he took his name from it. Yeah. Good taste.
